Smålands gold reserve
In Småland, attempts have been made to pan for gold without much success, but what might we unearth if we instead turned our attention to the ‘gold’ or ‘gull’ that we can easily find in abundance?
‘Småland’s Gold Reserve’ is an artistic project being presented as part of the Småland Triennial. The project is the brainchild of the artist Anna-Karin Arvidsson.
The project takes its starting point in Canadian goldenrod, an invasive plant that is usually regarded as a problem in the landscape. By borrowing language, processes and concepts from humanity’s relationship with gold, the project explores the plant from cultural, historical, economic, material, ethical, ecological, aesthetic and emotional perspectives.
In August 2026, artists, designers and specially invited participants from various fields of expertise will come together for a series of workshops. Through artistic processes, they will explore how goldenrod can be understood in new ways – not merely as a biological challenge, but also as a bearer of stories, experiences and possibilities.
The exhibition presents traces of these encounters and examines how art can help to re-evaluate established notions of nature, value and the future in an era characterised by uncertainty and change. The exhibition also features works by Anna-Karin Arvidsson created during the project.
The artistic project is being shown as part of the Småland Triennial 2026, with the theme ‘Anxiety – Art, Preparedness and Resistance’
Opening hours: Saturdays and Sundays, 11.00–15.00
